Birthing From Within training at THE FARM
I had the unique privilege in April 2008 of taking a
wonderful
Birthing From Within Mentor (childbirth
educator) training at
The Farm in Tennessee. I learned so
much about how I can facilitate and nurture a trust in the
birth process which greatly enhanced my CAPPA
training. Although my classes are not exclusively
Birthing
From Within, I incorporate many of the Coping Practices
and Birth Art exercises that I learned at this training into
both my private and group Childbirth Education Classes.
(Please see my Services page for more information.)
Spending time at
The Farm was a peak experience for me as a Birth Professional. Please check out The Farm’s
website to learn more about it. I also had the pleasure of
spending some time with two incredible women: Ina May
Gaskin founder of The Farm and author of invaluable
books like
Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth and Pam
England, the author of
Birthing From Within.
I believe that birth is a normal, healthy process in the
life of a woman, and I have confidence in a woman’s
innate ability to give birth.
I respect that every woman has different needs and
desires for her birth experience. I am entirely
comfortable supporting you in having the birth
experience you want, whatever that may be.
I believe every woman deserves an empowering
birth experience, no matter what type of birth she is
striving for.
I will support your unique way of staying connected to your body, your baby and your birth.

As a Birth Doula, I support most of my clients in the hospital
setting with the goal of having a safe and positive birth
experience
providing non-medical support only. Attending homebirths as an assistant,
I am more a part of the actual physical care rather than exclusively support. I find both types of work extremely rewarding and look forward to continuing to do them concurrently.
As a woman who is passionate about the value of the birth
experience, I whole heartedly believe in the Midwifery Model of
Care. I hope to become a Certified Professional Midwife in the
coming years. I am currently assisting Merrie MacDowell, RM (a homebirth midwife in Colorado Springs)
during prenatal appointments, homebirths, and postpartum visits.
I encourage every woman to research her choices in birth place
and care providers. There are many to choose from: a
homebirth with a Certified Professional Midwife, a birth center
birth or hospital birth with a Certified Nurse Midwife, and a
hospital birth with an Obstetrician are our choices in Colorado.
Be sure to check out
Colorado’s only Birth Center, Mountain
Midwifery located in the southern part of Denver.

Although we are all grateful for the often life saving
interventions we have in the hospital environment, it has
become painfully clear that they are simply over-used. The
Farm’s statistics show a low rate of intervention and
excellent outcomes and has been a shining example of the
perfect design of women’s and baby’s bodies during the
birth process since 1974. We really can trust our bodies
and birth!
I spent some time visiting some of the sites that I
have read about in Ina May’s books, including The
Farm Clinic where pregnant women are still seen.
